At present, a unit of 12 Knights of the realm with a full command group, charging in Lance formation, has a whopping 10 attacks (not including the horses) and would average a combat resolution score of 10 (causing on average 5 wounds, plus the rank bonus, outnumbering and a banner).
Proposal 1 The Lance formation does not gain a rank bonus for each of the ranks behind the first, instead counts every full 2 ranks for a rank bonus of 1. This would reduce the average score down to 8 for the above formation.
Proposal 2 A Lance formation has no flanks, instead anything that charges the unit in the flanks counts as charging it in the rear.
I feel this gives the Lance formation a bonus, and makes it more of a risk...
Any feedback??

i think knights in lance formation should just be treated more like a normal formation unit. instead of treating the flanks of the lance as the rear, why not simply treat flanks as flanks? that would give a disadvantage to the current rules but not such a drastic one as the -2 for being charged in the rear. As for ranks, perhaps count a 'rank' as being every 4 or 5 knights, regardless of their formation.
