Abbadon can take a Bodyguard of up to 5 terminators (who get to teleport in for free with him), and I think one of the Blood Angels characters can take a squad of veteran jumppackers similarly. I'd say the easiest thing to do is just to take an appropriate squad, and have your character deploy with it. I would assume the Honour Guard would come from your Troops allotment, rather than your Characters.

Codex Chaos hints at this with the Sorcerer Bodyguard. A section of the Sorcerer profile is given to a bodyguard which can be 3-5 thousand sons bought form the squads section, the sorcerer must lead them. This seems to imply that the squads VPs are also separate so it seems a pointless entry in many respects. Essentially an honour guard would just be a combat squad of veterans or nearest equivalent.
In the new editions the honour box set is essentially a group of characters, in response just attach these characters to the squad representing the honour guard, + you can always have medics and standard bearers in the honour squad for show rather than having an in-game rules impact.
