Wow what a battle me and Charly just fought with our respective marine armys.
Mine was fast and devastating, with a beefy chief librarian on combat drugs, my core being assault squads based in transports and 3 bike squads.
Charlys was a more solid firepower army, with counter charging assault squad and a pair of twin linked preds.
The missions.. White scars: Gorilla war. Ultra marines: Dawn Raid.
Deployment, my Scars deployed 1st, but took 1st turn. I deployed my main assaulting force on my left flank, ready to move up through the forest and cliffs providing cover to that flank, while some bikes and my dreadnought held the centre and right of the table. Charly deployed opposite, with his preds on my weak flank ready to take advantage. His veterans in cover in the woods, ready to soak up my charge and his squads dug into cover ready to provide fire support. The assault marines and chaplain deployed in the centre ready to lend support wherever their jumps would be needed.
The game was set for a very close battle.
I went first, my highly mobile force kicking into action with my transports and a bike squad wasting no time in taking my left flank, my dread made a bold move running through cover straight at charlys two predators, it would at least draw some fire, if not charly would face a very pissed off dread in close range, the ball was in his court. A squad of bikes suicided down that flank, one armed with a flamer roasting a bunker full of marines.
My shooting was pretty abismal this turn, i blocked off a squad of bikes and attack bike from firing with my command rhino, also granting them cover from return fire. My bikes that did fire only scored a few kills on the dug in ultra marines, and my pred and other attack bike completely missed his twin preds, meaning I would feel the pain as he returned fire. The only solace was my twin heavy bolter razorback hitting the veterans in the woods, scorring 2 jams, but taking down the lazcannon.. huzzah!
Charlys return fire was only slightly less crappy, he desimated my pred with a lone attackbike, the assault marines got into cover ready to counter my inevitable charge and despite both his preds firing at my gutsy dread, they only succeded in ripping its power claw from its body, incredibly I realised I would actually get a turn of firing its assault cannon. Appart from the squad of bikes that had bitten off more than they could chew gettin smashed by return fire, charlys shooting was little more eventful than some squads on overwatch being unable to hit bikes due to their high speeds (and sneakily running them over to knock off overwatch).
It was turn 2, my transports swung into action in front of charly main line, the 10 assault marines and 2 librarians deploying right in their face opening up with close range plasma pistols.. the veteran sarg armed with a meltagun, armed his 'Armour peircing ammo' and succeded in hitting the ultra marine dread, where my attack bike had failed, the resulting hit (with +D20 pen thanks to AP ammo) turning the war machine into a buring pill box, it wasnt happy. My dread limped on, only landing 3 wounds on a combat squad with its assault cannon, it could at least still draw some fire. My bikes in the centre, miraculously unscathed by charlys first shooting phase, took advantage of being alive by engaging the near by attack bike.
The psychic phases so far had seen my Cheif librarian building an impressive array of librarian powers around him, and in this turn he shrugged off a deamonic attack.
Charly wasted no time in getting his surrounded veterans stuck into combat, while his assault marines charged my razorback with 2 melta bombs, a last stand attempt to damage my forced paused to whipe out his flank. In the centre, his dread rolled a 2!! Its fuel tanks exploding, destroying it (I got a little over excited at this point, much to the disapproval of mike's sleeping flat mates). On his other flank, charly finally flattened my dread with another salvo from his predators.. he was also probably feeling quite happy about the lack of anything contesting that flank to the preds, they didnt have many targets, but they were getting dangerously close to my deployment zone, and id forgotten charly had dawn raid!! Argh!
Despite not only forgetting charly had dawn raid, I also forgot I had Gorrila War by this point.. which didnt matter to much as my assault squads and HQ got stuck into some hand to hand. The razor back which had suffered catastrophic damage from the melta bomb on its hull, we both gritted out teeth as it smashed out of control into a cliff, the 3" explosion killing about 2 nearby marines each.
Charlys strong flank consolidated against the remaining attack bike in the last few turns, and his predators moved into my DZ to claim a strong Dawn raid, my forces had been compromised and it suddenly dawned on me.. the missions!! crap.
Cut off by bikes debris in the centre, all that remained for me was to demolish as much of charlys flank in the forrest as I could, my drugged up librarian with powers comming out of his eye sockets, was making light work of 2-3 marines a turn, certainly helping my mission along. But a turn out of combat, hiding behind a sandbag wall saw the 2 enemy predators firing on my comander from my own DZ, its at that point when your a CO, you wonder where the rest of your army is. Amazingly only 2 lascannons landed hits, his terminator armour baring one, and thanks to psychic sheild, he saved 6 of the 9 wounds, leaving him on 1 wound, and me feeling a little uncomfortable.
My librarian thanked the Emperor and rejoined the fray with the enemy veteran, by turn 4, charly entire flank was wiped out, and a had a full 6 out of 10 assault marines alive, I was happy how my assault had gone.
One last ditch attempt to see off the librarian that had wrough so much havoc, saw charlys hoping id roll a 5+ for my combat drug test and suffer the final wound on my commander, a short tense moment, but I was lucky.
A really fun and quite close game I think we'd both agree, swinging in both directions for quite a few turns. However poor commanding on my part, and keeping his cool under the pressure to remember the objective, saw charly the Victor as the scores were totted up.. 19-16 to the Ultra Marines. Had I managed a couple of extra CC kills, or remembered charlys objective, it could have been a draw, but then Im sure charly could say the same for letting my assault devastate his flank.
Hats off to charly, well played mate, by far the best game Ive played in a long time, if not ever, loved every second, even in defeat, was by far more fun than a lot of my wins.
Real shame we took no picture, the board and armys looks really great, Id get carried away and start paint jobbing the turn sequences, but I really have to go to sleep.. stupid getting up for work lol
Please add to that charly if ive missed any important parts out, or told it a lil biased
