If you still have a squad on overwatch that hasnt fired after your opponent has finished his movement phase, can they fire before your opponent starts his shooting phase or do you lose it?

Overwatch shots can be taken at any time before your next turn. If an opponent declares a unit is going to fire you can still use overwatch but if you fire at the unit that has declared then they still get to fire first.

Psychic phase included.
The targeting rules still apply to overwatch. You must still fire at the closest vehicle or trooper. Overwatch differs only in that it allows but does not require units on overwatch to use a 360 degree field of fire for basic and special weapons. Most groups also apply this to heavy weapons as well.

we use 90 per cent field of vision for overwatch. and shoot only in enemy's movement phase.
it got me thinking btw, 90 pecent fov is a bit unreasonable. i mean almost every man (without strong glasses) has more or less 180 fov. why isn't it a case in 2ed?
sorry for highjacking the thread.

The rulebook says that the 90 degree field of vision only applies to heavy weapons on overwatch. That fits in with weapons having to be set up in a fixed way.
+ you can only use overwatch in the movement phase. Its can be a strategy to actually have bait squads and suddenly end your movement phase to deny an opponents overwatch. This represents an army actually being pinned and adds a dynamic to the movement phase + it can get nervier the loner you leave overwatch and you can force a snap decision by your opponent.
Overwatch is one of the best things in 2nd ed, it captures a lot fo what makes the game great.....and where is it in 4th edition..?....

In answer to bot, yeah we may have nearly 180 vision.
But you are not capable of FIRING 180, if you fired at someone on your full right, or full left, youd probably fall over from recoil.

GW at one time felt overwatch could take place only in the movement phase. That was rethought a long time ago and overwatch is not limited to just the movement phase. You will find that if you review the Q&A that overwatch shots can be taken at any time.
