How would you guys equip wolf scouts? I tried giving my Black Shadows (Panthers chapter version of wolf scouts) sniper rifles, but with a BS of 3, they’re not that great with them. (One nice thing about 4th ed: Sniper rifles hit on a 2+, regardless of BS). But they’re not quite tough enough to charge them into close combat either (plus, Panther Claws are much better at it, and can take jumppacks). What’s a good use for them? What objectives would you give them to fulfill?

Wolf scouts are one of the most effective units in the army. Mine have two basic roles. The first role is to put up a screen of blind grenades at the end of my shooting phase. This can effectivly isolate part of the enemy army or deny key fire/movement lanes even if the scouts can't reach the enemy units themselves. The second role of the scouts is to reveal enemy unit locations so the Wolves main body can target them in the first turn as Wolves often go first this is vital as the enemy tend to slink around like cowards and hide in their DZ.
I love these guys but they often don't live all that long as they tend to be isolated as well as annoying to the enemy. They don't kil much themselves but I find them almost priceless. I always give them blind grenades and swords just in case the enemy get to close.

So really, I need to relegate them to minor harrassment duties. Sniper rilfes are not a bad idea, as long as I don't plan on them actually taking anything out. They do aid in the harrassment capabilities, but blind/smoke grenades are far more important. Plus swords for self defense. Do you usually give them bolters, or leave them with just their pistols?

As you noted with such a poor BS I limit them to the pistols they come with. Besides mine are always so busy lobbing grenades they don't get a chance to do much else. Harrassament and denial is how I use them. That may not seem like much but they offer a huge actual return on the points invested in game terms. The utility of infiltrators with blind grenades cannot be under estimated. 5 2" templates cover a lot of ground 10 or so by the second turn offer complete isolation and chaos to whole sections of the enemy line. In fact two squads of these guys could nuetralize nearly half an army or at least one flank for a turn or more. Just try moving or firing units through 10 blind grenade clouds. All while the Wolves in the main force hammer your other flank. Thats so beardy I've never done it.
