Well, I finally finished painting my Swooping Hawks. For the longest time they sat on my shelf, and I had no idea how to paint them. So I asked my wife if she'd paint the Exarch for me. She did, and I painted the rest to match. So here they are in all their glory!

Nice, show them again when based, a dark based would be a nice contrast!

Um...they are based. All my mini's get a flat grey finish to their bases. Some day I may be bothered to go back and spiff them up a bit, but I've got so many models still to paint, that I just can't take the time. Besides, grey is a nice, neutral color that goes with any gaming table. Nothing is sillier than having models tracking ice through the desert, or jungle plants through an urban environment. I know it's all the rage, these days, but I'm just not going for it. Um...[/rant]

I guess it depends what tables you plan on like you say.
But a base can add a lot to a model, like mike says, not because it looks good alone, its so you can add completely contrasting color to the mini which makes the bright reds/yellows stand out even more. On top of that it massively helps tie an army together, and can give some flavor to where they have come from.
Although if you want them to blend in to many different terrains what can I say..
