In my lack of PS3 and consequently lack of MGS4 depression, I've been rooting out a few apparant classics that I never played. One is Deus Ex which my mate lent me, and another is Gothic which Charly has banged on about for a long time.
I have to say this really is a hidden classic! It may be 8 years of age but it is comparable to GTA bit in my opinion actually better. A quick overview, your in a fantasy setting - a mining colony that has revolted but is trapped inside a magic barrier. The priasoners have broken into sects each with different objectives and attitudes to breaking out fo the barrier. The game plays out with you choosing a sect etc, in a very free-form way. the colony is pertty big and you can pretty much go where you like and most things int he game are directly interactable with. Whats more all of your ctions have direct consequences, kill someone then it'll stir trouble, pickpocket someone and a fight may break out, and when thigns die, be it beasts or characters they stay dead. It really is impressive, you can do much more than in GTA, with the exception of vehicles.
It is quite dated in looks but its still very funcitonal and looks better than GTA San An for example, and has some nice effects, such as a thnderstorm casuing the barrier to light up. The controls can be very cumbersome at time also, hwoever not as cumbersome as in GTA either.
Very glad to have had a chance to discover this, I now have no desire for GTA 4 at all (and I have ppasted all of the GTA games to date so far!), Im looking forward to the two Gothic sequels!
