Just a musing thought but which system would you actually prefer to use?
VP classic - the standard 2nd edition chart from Dark Millenium, with points split into bands, whereby units must fit into bands of 100 points to be worth more/less VPs
VP100 - units are worth exactly what they are in terms of points, if they are fully destroyed or they are halved.
as a note, if you divide VP100 by 100 it often turns out the same equivalent VPs as the classic system, the difference being you can slap a few extra points on here and there.

The VP classic system does have it's merits.

I still use the original system. Of course, VP very rarely factors into my calculations when I'm putting my armies together. I usually just look at what I have, and how it fits into the army I want to build. But I don't fight in tourney's either (which is why I have neglected to vote in the poll).

Tournament pressure certainly changes everything! Actually we have discovered that generally armies should not break a 3 or 4 VP range either side of ! 00 pts = 1 VP +5 (ie 2,000 pts = 25 VPs). This is a big factor when making the new CODEX's. Also the classic system allows for easier balance tweaking, something deadly loses a bit of an edge when you mod its points slightly to push it into another bracket (and vice versa). Sorry I'm thinking out loud a little in this post but your post made me muse

I'd say classic, having to keep your squads slightly restricted with VPs in mind adds a little extra level of competitiveness i.e. how to make a squad effective and cheap. Anyone can whack 4 multi meltas in a Devo squad and cause some havok.
Things like Terminator heavy weapons costing an extra VP.

Agree with Brown, its the little things that push squad costs just over the mark that make the balance, and make army selection a real part of the game!
