Holding personal records is fine, but OGC as an organisation body cannot recognise Magic as a game that can be accruately ranked. As Magic decks are defined by their card pool, simply spending mroe money usually means a better deck. And the luck dependancy factor is also fairly great. Also some decks trash others, no matter the players involved. If you want to create records they should focus on the decks used and use only the players as a second line for statistical readings.
I have some good books on defining and analysing statistical data and what and what is not possible (hell i had to do 4 semesters of ranking ordinal data) i recommending reading through those to get an idea of how we could rank MTG games.
If you take the warhammer and 40k records, once an army has been collected it comes down to amatter of strategy and knowledge to win games and this amkes all the differcne when mapping it statistically.
If you want the appropriate training for mapping data then I could point you in the directions to start but as I see only the sealed format can really guage a players deck building ad playing abilities. Even then, the winner of the Magic Tournament can jsut get lucky, but at least its a level playing field for everyone then. (This was the reason that constructed didnt make it into T2005).
Perhaps you would be best to create a mini league handicap system and see what comes from that, so the betterplayers play each other and the 'lesser' (sorry) players build up their skills against each other.

Of course you guys who have the money and time and knowlage to get better decks are going to be at a huge advange to people like me and carly. We carly sugested the idea of ranks, say experts, noobs, whatever. It's of course the persons own deiction what rank or leauge they want to be in, but im sure most of us have the honor not to all enter into the noobs group for cheap and easy kills (I'm looking at you Laharl *wink*) Joking asside, what do you think? it could also encorage people like me, carly, heather, and any others who just play for fun to compete. Maybe prizes! SWEETS? CAN WE HAVE SWEETS LUKE???

Apologies if my last post sounded a little ott formal, but accurate records and rankings is something the club takes very seriously, whence I have to go all serious!
If you want to throw some ideas and test them out then by all means do but please dont turn Magic into an overly competetive thing. You wont get any accuarte readings and it wont be about building decks with the cards you love anymore. I poerosnally refrain from using my 'main deck' because tbh its a winner deck and not much fun. But my more crazier decks get beaten alot but are much more fun to play with, at the end of the day make sure you enjoy this hobby!!!!

I totaly agree, I can't stand games like that being competative and taken really seriously. It's one of the reasons carly doesnt love the game much. It makes it come accross really childish and makes the game feel like a chore not fun The reason I show up to the meetings is just for a bit of social fun with people who an't total asshats like most of uni

Recorded games are completely optional and are by request Most games will remain fun and casual at Edge Hill, I carry around 6 decks of varying power levels with me at the moment for just this reason. 4 are being tweaked to win-deck status, 1 was good by accident, and 1 is completely casual. I already put in the Magic section of the site that I want to put the decks being used into 3 bands of power; Expert Advanced Casual -so the option is there to play at your own level and just for fun. Any rcorded games I'll record all data and we'll put it together later in a representative way. I'm thinking Player / Deck rated together instead of just player rankings.

do you just request a ranking game or something?
That can really annoying when people argue about a rule, you should have seen Luke over the morph rule, i wish i'd recorded it so i could play it back to him.

I'll just say this now, if you guys are gonna start a ranking league don't put me in it, as I want nothing to do with it. I only build decks on pretty pictures and things that amuse me, stratagy and tactics mean close to nothing to me, and so the point in even bothering to rank me is lost.

Hey everyone.
I thought I was the only MTG player in Ormskirk! Sold out of Ravnica stuff in comic shop and then saw the sign for the OGC and here I am!
I do really suck at playing as I have never played anyone with actual cards. I'm a dab hand online though, look for me (klown_wizard).
Just wondering when the next meeting is. Sorry I can't make it to any afternoon sessions due to work. And Edgehill? I've done my time there and can't stand the place!
Anyway, nice to see that there is a MTG community right here in Ormskirk!

All he had was Darksteel and SOC boosters! Ideally, I wanted a CHK tourny or ravnica fat pack, so I ended up with nothing!
I'm at work all day, which is why I'm looking for an evening meeting. I understand that the canteen will be shut, but maybe we could get get some pub action? MTG and a pint, sounds good.
My Thursday nights and weekends are free, should any members want to meet up.

OK, just found out the cards I need to get. Does anybody have any spare copies of Daru Warchief, Gempalm Avenger, Aven Brigadier, or any other white avens? Will do buy, trade or take.

The Hayfeild is the normal pub for OGC magic. I'll get on to Mike (who may be working), I should be good for some Thursday night Magic. I'll have to check my time table, sometimes I have to cover on a Thursday night Do you know the Hayfield is? And how to spell it? (yeah right I'm an English student )

Could I suggest (and I don't mean to step on anybodies toes here, what with being a newbie) maybe the Queens head? Its more convenient being right in the centre for everybody and is a little ye olde tavern-ish.
Plus, its cheap.
And if Out there guy got his delivery today and has sold out already, there will be blood! Tried to sneak out of work today to purchase, but boss only came just before 5 and he'd shut!!
Oh, and Im free all day tomorrow if anyone's interested.

yeah, sounds good, have to go on a quiet day, or we are going to end up with a million drunk idiots throwing beer at the cards and shouting "lol u play cards" while talking about the best way to mod the gearbox on a nova so that it makes PISSST sound when you change gears.
