Yeah, and even if the transport hurtles roughly to where you wanted to bail anyway, you still lose a good proportion of the squad.. which makes blowing the tank still really worth it.
But again, I stress, if you dont want a transport to get blown up, hide it behind cover (if available), or if not, screen it with a heavier tank that can absorb more fire, even if you lose your say predator, youve gained the safe positioning of a tactical squad in the centre of the table on turn 1.. a very strong tool.

Basically the rule is as follows: Any models int ransit (not crew) which wind up being dead as per the vehicle damage chart can make their armour save (not invulnerable except rune) or die. Flak armour gets a 5+ save.
This can be jsutified (not just as a vital game mechanic change) as the transport compartment being 'plugged in' to the vehicle and as such has its own internal armour to proetect it from hull breaches such as extra ceramite armour plates, consequnetly it can be safer to be within this heavy casing then on the outside as a tank tears open.
A squad MUST eject from a destoryed tank as soon as possible (in a legal move such as in the movement phase)

The armour save rule is a good one. Otherwise transports are often not worth considering. I have used them in the past with Marines and IG but as has already been mentioned I made sure the troops were out at the end of my first turn. Oddly the rhinos I used in the marine armies always surrvived the next turn as well and in each case they were hell bent for running down the enemy gun line. Go figure...
I also agree that transports can be screened to great effect. The Eldar in particular can do this with units as simple as a few jet bikes. Keeping the Falcon in cover and flanking certainly does help as well though. Still its a gamble.

Depends what kind of force you feild, if you have lots of slower, heavier stuff, then yes a transport shooting forwards will draw attention.
Most of my armies are quite fast however, and if you put your entire army in your opponents face, there is only so much of it he can destroy.
