we could come up with small 1 VP conditions like killing the enemy commander etc that apply to everybody....even the dreaded table quarters although I'm not a fan of that as it takes some emphasis from the game, but anyway, that could be an interesting thing to try out in the future.

That what I was thinking, table quaters is a bit iffy, but maybe if you hold the centre of the table and there is no enemy prescene there..

has anybody considered the option of each player actually picking his own mission? cant complain its not a suitable mission for the army then, it could actually become a tactical desicion and fully part of a game.

I did actually think about that yesterday, it does seem an amicable solution, maybe a few games would see if it worked.
One problem could be if you made an army esspecially trailored for a certain mission, which may be quite useless at any other mission, and just choose that mission over and over.
The point of missions should be to test and armys flexibility and diversity, not to test how well it is honed on one mission.

Perhaps the arbitrator (or a member of the OGC who didn't qualify and doesn't hold a grudge) could select a particular mission for each level of the tournament, and tell everyone what the missions will be, so you can plan an army that can carry out several distinct missions. They should be a wide range, from Hold the Line to Dawn Raid, and perhaps a Take and Hold as well, so each type of army can count on both a sit-back and a rush forward mission.
I think picking your own missions is a bad idea. Guard armies will pick hold the line, engage and destroy, and perhaps Assassins or With Hunt. Tyranids will take Guerilla War, Engage & Destroy, and Dawn Raid. Or perhaps Witch Hunt (Psychic Scream anyone?). I think picking your own missions will lead to abuse.

Picking your own missions is a no no, its just too easy to build an army around certain missions.
I'd only trust somone who really understands the game and balance to set missions, otherwise you are bound to get really biased games. Missions leaning slightly one way or another is only natural, but the problem comes when its the finals, every point counts then, often down to 1 or 2 VPs.

Just so you guys know, I've got some time off from the 13th to the 17th of May (I would have had the 12th off but I've booked in some overtime). I'll actually finish on the 12th at 2pm, so if you want to do Tim's qualifier then I'll have the time available.
