That was Mike, he seems to have had a fit of sanity and deleted it though (or else the Pro-Boards legal team took it down before law suits began to fly)

Yeah it was me. I realised id basically made a post that I wouldnt be impressed about if someone else did it so it was removed. It shall not happen again, even if it was accurate (though it would have had to be transcribed by someone who can use a keyboard)

Wow, Monovie! You really have a knack for reviving old threads. You got some phoenix downs there that you're not telling us about?

When I read the title of this thread I knew what book would lead the list... not here to really discuss, just commenting...

yeah its so pointless that it underpins the functions of our society, and creates much of the moral basis by which we live.
Pointless that it has given a faith for over a billion people living in poverty.
Im not a Christian, by any means and certainly dont agre with portrayals and the justification for violence that the bilbe has wrought over the millenia but the bible is if anything the most important book in existence. If you read this thread thoroughly and look at who says the idiotic things though you can see who is narrow minded.

This is wandering close to the swastika thing here, a symbol of peace can be perverted into a rallying cry for genocide. The bible is used as a weapon on a daily basis, a license to suspend your morals and murder people for being different. As long as preachers of the idiotic are allowed to use the bible as a tool for murder then it's irrevocably tainted. How many people how 'live' by the bible have actually interpeted it themselves from the original Hebrew? The King James bible was a monstrous bastard to begin with but has been raped year in and year out by bigoted arsehole twisting it to say what they want, but more then that how many people who 'live' by the bible have even bothered reading the latest bastardised version of it and instead are just given the highlights by a brotherhood notorious for harbering peadophiles?
I have a lot of problems with the bible, and they aren't random rants.

The Bible I use has been translated directly from the Hebrew and the Greek - and I am a Christian.
Can I deny that there are 'idiotic preachers' - unfortunately no, I cannot. Can I deny that the Bible has been used for things ranging from the murder of docters that perform abortions to the Spanish inquisition - no, I cannot.
Just because there are idiots does not disrpove the book. It means that they are not reading the whole book, nor are they living by all that it says. That's like saying all environmentalists are deranged when one of their group say burns up someone's SUV or destroys some housing development to try.
I am confident that you have many, many problems with the Bible. I am confident that you (and others here) have problems with Chrisitianity. I am also confident that I am not the one to debate you (or others) on these issues. I've done so in the past with others and it just ends up go around and around.
But to say that the book is insignificant is to dismiss history. The Bible is significant if for nothing else than it's impact on the world. For good or bad - and it has certainly done both. But neither result is just because of the book itself - but the people who have read it - or listened to someone who has misinterpreted it without reading it for themselves.
IMO the most dangerous church is one where the congregation does not have a Bible open during the sermon.

There's one defining factor for all the major problems with religion... The extremist minorities giving all the people living their lives as best they can a bad name. Not only that, but hiding behind this majority that wants nothing to do with them. It's a wonderful world, isn't it.
